Complaining Won’t Fix It. Serving On The Board Will.

At Weiss Barber Supply, we aren't the ones holding the clippers, but we hear the real talk when you’re at the counter picking up product.
Lately, one topic keeps coming up: The Kansas Board of Barbering (KBOB).
We hear the frustrations. Whether it’s about inspections, regulations that feel outdated, or a general sense that the "powers that be" don't understand the modern industry. We hear you.
But here is the hard truth: The Board can only be as good as the barbers who sit on it.
If you are a young barber, passionate about this craft and its future, this is your wake-up call. We strongly encourage you to stop complaining and start applying.
What Actually is the KBOB?
Before you write them off, you need to know what they do. The Kansas Board of Barbering isn't just a group of people making up rules for fun. Their official mission is to protect the health and welfare of the public.
According to their
-
✅ Enforcing statutes and sanitation regulations.
-
✅ Ensuring only qualified barbers and instructors are licensed.
-
✅ Supervising the industry to keep it "State of the art."
The Board is made up of five members appointed by the Governor. Four of those five members must be licensed barbers. That means the industry is practically self-governed—if barbers step up to fill those seats.
We Need Fresh Ideas (Like This One ⬇️)
Why do we need young barbers on the board? Because the industry is changing, and we need rules that make sense for the future.
Take high schoolers, for example. We all know high school kids are out there cutting hair for money in kitchens and garages. Instead of ignoring it, what if the Board found a way to legitimize that passion?
Imagine a regulation that allowed these high schoolers to apprentice at a licensed shop before they graduate. We could get them out of the garage, under the mentorship of a pro, and give them a head start before they even begin barber college. ✂️
That’s the kind of forward-thinking idea that only happens when active, passionate barbers get involved in the decision-making process.
How to Make a Difference
You don’t need to be a politician. You just need to be a qualified, service-minded Kansan who cares about barbering.
Board members serve three-year terms. That is three years where you could have a direct vote on how our profession is regulated. The Governor’s office is actively seeking people to serve, and the application is open to everyone.
